Mysore:
Even the police look up to the almighty for solving their problems like
warding off evil, breakthrough in crime cases and also for well being
of colleagues.
Inspector
Chandrashekar of the Devaraja police station begins his daily routine,
only after offering pooja to the idol of Lord Ganapathi. At a temple?
No, it is at the station itself. He has ‘consecrated’ an idol of
Ganapathy at the corner of a room.
As soon
as the inspector comes to the station, he washes his legs and hands
and lights incense stick. He plucks flowers at a nearby place for the
pooja. During his previous posting at Krishnaraja police station too,
the cop had kept an idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari along with the portraits
of other gods and goddesses. |

Incidentally,
Chamundeshwari temple atop Chamundi Hills falls in the jurisdiction
of KR Police limits itself.
Inauspicious
guest
Recently,
when Chandrashekar was busy browsing through the files, a crow entered
his chamber and before he could recover from the shock on having inauspicious
‘guest’, another crow entered.
Earlier,
two cops attached to the station had suffered injuries in freak mishaps.
More shocking
to the top cop, was the death of another colleague, Y T Madegowda, a
head constable who died of a heart attack, after collapsing while on
duty near Boti Bazaar. In addition to this, a series of thefts were
also reported.
In the
meantime, an astrologer had reportedly advised the cop to perform homa
at the station and also clean the space in the back of the station which
was littered with seized materials including two-wheelers, as it is
a Daiva Moola (auspicious space for pooja, especially at homes).
He also
attributed the accidental injuries of colleagues, untimely death of
a cop, series of crimes and also crow flying into his chamber to the
untidy Daiva Moola.
As the
good old building which houses the Station was once a dwelling of Resident
Medical Officer (RMO) of adjacent KR Hospital, the Inspector believed
in the words of priest. Now, that particular space is being cleaned.
A garden is likely to come up on the same place, so that no one tramples
the area with their footwear on.
Finally,
last Thursday (May 26) a day-long homa was performed at the police station.
The air around the police station was filled with vedic hymns and smoke
from the ‘homa kunda’.
No new
trend
Police
sources said god fearing policemen, especially those in the higher posts,
are not new. Whenever they come across any complex cases, most of them
have ‘harake’ (pledge) at Chamundi Hills and ‘Arathi Ukkada’,
the abode of Goddesses Ahalya Devi and Renuka Devi near Srirangapatna
in neighbouring Mandya district. If the case is solved, they will fulfil
their pledge.
Praveen
Sood had a pledge at Chamundeshwari’s abode praying for the successful
Dasara during his tenure as Police Commissioner of the City. When the
event passed off out without any untoward incidents, he fulfilled the
wishes by offering pooja at the temple.
