THE WAGER OR CHALLENGE TO HOMEOPATHS
TO VALIDATE THEIR CLAIMS AND THE PROPOSED PROCEDURE FOR CONDUCTING IT
1. 100 bottles of commonly used Homeopathic
remedies of different potencies are to be bought off the shelf from
shops to be chosen by the challenger. To this we will be added 10 bottles
of water in bottles identical to the 100 remedies with identical labels.
Thus there will 110 bottles to start with.
2. As there are over 5000 remedies
it would be cumbersome and expensive to look for all 5000 remedies in
the 110 bottles. So whatever remedies are chosen their name will be
disclosed to the Homeopaths so that they can narrow down the search
to 30-50 remedies. However their potencies will not be disclosed.
3. The above 30-50 samples will be
chosen at random by a computer from a list of 1000-2000 remedies at
the time of purchase. There is a list of common Homeopathic remedies
at
http://www.healing-arts.org/children/ADHD/homeopathy.htm#Alphabetical
4. The name labels on the 110 bottles
will be masked with opaque labels which can be easily removed to reveal
the remedy and its potency.
5. Another man who is not involved
in the labeling procedure will be put in charge of writing numbers from
1-110 on the masking labels.
6. 50 bottles of the 110 bottles will
be chosen at random using a computer software. (Such a software is readily
available at
http://www.mdani.demon.co.uk/para/random.htm and other
sites)
7. As much of the contents of these
chosen 50 bottles will be transferred to 50 sample bottles which will
be given the same numbers as the 50 chosen bottles. Homeopaths may use
these for testing.
8. All the original 110 bottles will
be locked away in a room with three locks – one lock each for me,
Manorama and the Homeopaths.
9. The homeopaths will be free to
do whatever they want with the samples and their results should be submitted
in 5 days.
10. After the results are ready the
sealed room will be opened and the results verified with the bottles.
11. If the results submitted by the
Homeopaths conform at least 95% (or as stipulated by set standards such
as the Indian Standards Institute) to the chosen 50 bottles as regards
the remedies and their potencies, I promise to pay a sum of Rs.25000/-
(Rs. Twenty-five Thousand only) to whomsoever that accepts this challenge.
A draft in favor of Malayala Manorama will be handed over to Manorama
before we commence the tests.
12. If the Homeopaths fail they have
to pay be a sum of Rs.25000/- (Rs. Twenty-five Thousand only) which
they have to submit to Manorama before commencing tests.
13. A similar payment will be paid
to Manorama towards expenses for buying samples and testing which is
not to exceed Rs.10000/-. The loser will forego this sum of money too.
14. In case of any dispute, Manorama
will appoint a team of 5 expert arbitrators with the consent of both
the opposing parties herein and the majority opinion of the arbitrators
will be binding on both the opposing parties herein.
15. The James Randi Educational Foundation
in the United States has put up another wager of US$1,000,000.00 (US
Dollars one million only) to anyone who can prove the efficacy of Homeopathic
medicines on terms announced by James Randi the world-famous skeptic.
Mr.James Randi has promised to permit anyone who successfully carries
out my challenge to enter the preliminary stage of the JREF challenge
for one million US Dollars.
16. The above suggested procedure
is tentative. Suitable alterations may later be effected to the above
procedure to make it more professional.
The man who has put up the wager,
Xavier William is a sixty year old Chemical engineer and a skeptic.
He is the author of ‘Economics, Ethics, Religions and Superstitions’
which has been published in the United States and the book is available
at Amazon, Ebay and other online book-stores. He has also published
