Restriction
of entry for non-Hindus in the Guruvayur temple has become a contentious
issue. Is it not a common sight to see such display boards at almost
all places of worship? The Mahalaxmi temple in Mumbai does not permit
people other than Hindus beyond a point. Mudbidiri does not permit non-Jalns.
Parsis strictly bar others from entering the fire temple. Even in mosques,
any non-Muslim is either advised to leave or join the faithful by converting.
Churches are no different. Next to Hindus, Christians in India are the
most divided. One faith does not permit the other to enter their church.
In gurudwaras and mazhars, covering one’s head is compulsory. A ritual
accepted by a sect has to be respected. We are a multi-cultural nation.
Secularism does not necessarily mean imposing everything on Hindus alone.
