Man marries
hill to flee goddess’ wrath
Deccan Herald - 18.10.2006
RANCHI, DHNS: In a
bizarre incident, a man in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district has
reportedly married a local hill hoping that the ritual would free
his family members from the curse of hill goddess. According to the
information, the marriage took place at Bordih village under Jhatijharna
panchayat of the district last week with all the fun and frolic of a
real marriage. The groom identified as Robin dressed himself in
wedding attire while a host of baratis took out the wedding procession
and reached the foothill of Lakhaisini. Robin then garlanded a rock,
smeared vermillion and accepted the hill as his wife.
This Bordih
village is situated in an underdeveloped tribal stronghold of
Chhotanagpur plateau region. Robin and his entire family members are
said to be illiterate. The village headman also attended the marriage
party.
Speaking
to Deccan Herald, Robin’s mother Keshwari Singh said
the hill goddess used to appear in her dreams often and tell her that
a catastrophe would follow if her son did not marry Goddess Lakhaisini.
She said: “Once I even fell from
Lakhaisini hill and the following night the goddess came in my dream and
said she was very much annoyed with my family.
“I
worshiped the goddess for three months and observed fast but her wrath was
far from over.”
