Dear Mr. Premanand, Hope your health has improved now. Yesterday I read a strange
news item in The Deccan Chronicle, which I am reproducing here:
Front page (1st) highlight
title: 6-YEAR OLD BOY GETS ‘DAUGHTER’ MARRIED
NATION - Hyderabad Friday 22 June 2007
The news item
is on the 9th page ‘NATION’ page:
6
year-old boy gets ‘daughter’ married By
Amita Verma
Lucknow,
June 21: A six-year-old “father” played gave away his 19-year-old
“daughter” Rita in marriage. Magaria village in Manipuri (sic
- Mainpuri) district watched this rather strange event as the bride’s
mother Phool Kumari wept inconsolably.
Prince,
6, claims that he was Rita’s father Kamlesh Shakya in his previous
birth and had been murdered in 2001.
“Prince
was barely one-and-a-half years old when he started saying that he wanted
to go to Magaria. We did not understand what he wanted, but about two
years ago he took the name of some people and said that they were his
relatives. He insisted on meeting them so we decided to probe further,”
says Naresh Shakya, the boy’s father.
Prince was brought to Magaria and he guided his father to his house in his previous birth.
He recognised each family member and even took them to the shop where
he used to get his watch repaired. Prince recalled how he had been shot
dead when he was working in the fields with
his nephew Darshan. Prince learnt that his ‘wife’ Phool Kumari was worried
about the marriage of their eldest daughter Rita.
“He
immediately said that he would shoulder the responsibility
of the marriage and, thereafter, he kept pressing me to look for a suitable
boy for Rita. Since the past one week, Prince has been accompanying
us to the market for shopping and has been selecting each item with
care,” says Naresh Shakya.
On Tuesday,
when Rita’s wedding took place, Prince insisted of (sic - on)
performing the rituals of the “father”. “It was only the priest
who objected, but when we explained the situation, he agreed,” said
Naresh.
I think
this is a very strange occurrence and needs thorough enquiry. What do
you say? Hope your rationalist association does a bit of scientific
investigation into this matter. Thank you.
With best wishes,
